Volunteer Job Descriptions
Volunteers are Critical!
With several different venues and activities of all kinds taking place throughout the night, this event won't be possible without the help of volunteers like
YOU!
Look at the list below to see the general description of the various volunteer needs. There's a place for everyone!
Training will be provided in advance of the event for all volunteers.
Volunteer Job Descriptions

Site Managers: Take charge of all front house activities at indoor venues including audience flow, assignment
and supervision of ushers and button sales personnel, assisting performers as needed and clean-up. Every
indoor venue requires a site manager.

Stage Managers: Responsible for all back of the house activity, including stage setup, and keeping the
performance on schedule. They assist performers and technical crews. In large halls and professional
theaters, stage managers may be a part of a paid house staff or technical crew. (Some call this the assistant
site manager.)

Master of Ceremonies: Responsible for welcoming the audience, introducing performers and making
announcements; works in concert with the site and stage managers. Contact toastmaster organizations, your
board, advisory board, and community theaters to recruit volunteers for this position.

Ushers: Under the supervision of the site manager, assist in seating the audience, hand out programs, aid in
crowd control, answer questions, and often double as a button checker and clean-up crew.

Button Checkers: Check buttons at the door for admission to indoor venues and assist in the compliance of
house capacity regulations. Give them audience counters and a record sheet with performance times.Sell buttons and merchandise, answer questions from the public. (Have FAQ's sheet,
maps, and schedules available for them.)

Creation Assistants: Assist in hands-on art-making activities for all ages. Examples might include face
painting, mask, headdress, wand or puppet-making. (Introduction sheets and examples of finished work
should be prepared for them.) Assistant with general Children's Activities.

Procession Marshals: One marshal per Procession unit assists with staging, starting, pacing, and ending the
Procession. They facilitate participation by encouraging members of the public to move in a festive manner
at a slow pace while carrying banners, flags, puppets, etc. Oversee Procession captains and assistants.

Set-up and Break-down: Assist First Night staff or technical crew in the set-up and break-down of the indoor,
outdoor, and logistical elements of the event. They will need radios, access passes, and trucks.
